The Stabbings at a Wendy’s in Los Angeles left one person dead and three wounded

Long Beach police arrest man in ‘unprovoked’ stabbings that left 1 dead, 3 wounded

Police arrested a man in connection with the stabbings at a fast-food restaurant that left one person dead and three wounded.

John Michael Smith, 36, of Los Angeles, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of 28-year-old Kevin Breen and his wife Christine Breen after a fight at the Wendy’s on West Olympic Boulevard at 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

Smith made an initial appearance in court on Wednesday and was ordered held in lieu of a $2 million cash bail. Smith remains held on two additional charges of attempted murder in the first degree and is being held without bail. His public defender declined to comment during the hearing.

West Olympic Boulevard at Pacific Coast Highway was blocked as police investigated the scene where a man they say stabbed two people to death and wounded three others early Thursday morning.

One of the victims was identified as Kevin Breen, 28, of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, Breen was found dead at the scene. Investigators believe Breen died of the stab wounds, but it remains unclear if the knife recovered was the weapon used.

The three injured people were identified as 23-year-old Christina Breen, and 20-year-old Michael David Smith, both of Los Angeles. It’s being investigated if they are related.

Smith is being held in lieu of bail. He’s being represented by the county Public Defender’s Office, as is the victim’s brother.

Two of the wounded victims were taken to a nearby hospital. Christina Breen was conscious and alert, but was not transported to the hospital.

The third victim, Michael David Smith, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“These guys are two brothers, and they got into a fight with a person they did not know. They stabbed both of them multiple times. Both of them are dead,” said L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Major Adam Ward, who was briefed by investigators about this latest developing story. “We’ve had numerous, numerous cases of stabbing and gun fire at this particular restaurant. We have not had any in the last year or so. So we are looking into that to see if we might have had an incident there and there was a gun involved in that as well.”
