Scattered storms, lightning hit Southern California and prompt beach closures
The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for Southern California and issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region Saturday afternoon, prompting evacuation warnings and beach closures.
The storm hit at around 5:30 p.m. PT and was moving southeast at 6 mph. The storm stalled in a band of low pressure about 20 miles south of Ventura County, which sent heavy rains to north and central areas of Los Angeles County.
The system caused dangerous road conditions and dangerous storm conditions. Highway 14 was closed in both directions at the Harbor Island State Park. Highway 126 was closed in both directions at the Ventura County line. Highway 12 at the Ventura-1 Freeway was closed southbound.
