On a normal day at Máirnames, there is a steady flow of passengers entering the airport.

But on Sunday evening, not one single passenger was coming through the doors of the Irish airport, which is a sad reality.

Instead of regular airlines, only Aer Lingus was operating, with around six flights scheduled.

In the days leading up to the closure, there had been a reported number of cancellations and delays over the weekend, as there was also a planned strike on the airline, which is the biggest carrier at the airport.

This morning, Aer Lingus cancelled all of its flights, leaving its three remaining flights at Máirnames to a single passenger, who was able to get to the airport safely.

This was despite the closure, which took place at 6pm on Sunday evening. In the days leading up to the closure, the airport was experiencing a severe backlog.

“There are a number of airline routes which were not being served by Aer Lingus but they now have another route,” Airport director Anthony O’Connor told The Irish Times.

He also said that when Aer Lingus cancelled its flights, it also delayed several flights, which then impacted other customers and airlines.
