A year after winning the same award, Drake is set to claim this year’s SOCAN Songwriter of the Year for his title track “Nice For What”, with the track beating out tracks from Lorde, Mark Ronson, Beyonce and others.

The track and its accompanying video were released as a single on Friday, November 6, and as a music video to the song on Friday, November 13. The track’s title is an allusion to his previous track “Nice For What”, which was included in his hit project Take Care.

At last week’s ceremony at The O2, Drake performed the track for the first time live on stage, with fellow nominees including Lorde, Mark Ronson and Beyonce. He also performed “Hymenumyra” (a song he wrote and included in his 2012 album Views) and “Passionfruit”, a song he wrote for his 2010 LP Views. Drake received the SOCAN Song of the Year honour for the first time in 2015 for “Hotline Bling”, performed live on The X Factor.

“Drake’s ‘Nice for What’ has made itself one of the most talked about tracks for a reason,” said SOCAN Chairman and CEO Robyn Griggs.

“From its iconic video to its undeniable groove and overall emotional resonance, Drake is the embodiment of a great songwriter. His talents are undeniable and he proves that he is well-suited to compete for such an important award. The ‘Nice for What’ is a track that captures the essence of an era that will always be remembered as Drake’s best work. We are delighted to see his talent recognised for his creative evolution and we wish him and his team every success for the rest of the award season.”

“Nice for What” is available now for streaming on Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, Google Play and Amazon Music. It was released as a single on Spotify on October 31.
